A lot of people's travel stress is actually due to their packing and the issues associated with getting their luggage to and from their destination. Everyone has heard stories or even has their own story about checked luggage being delayed or even completely lost! The not so secret key to packing for airline travel is to avoid checking bags whenever possible! This can seem impossible, but is very practical for most people if you are willing to spend a bit of time on strategy and possibly some cash on luggage which is optimized for being carried on.
The formula for maximizing your carry-on luggage is simple. You want one larger bag that is at or near the maximum legal size for carrying on. This will hold the bulk of your stuff and will almost always go in the overhead baggage compartment. You want another bag that can fit under the seat in front of you. Many people believe that a rolling bag is the ideal carry-on bag. In fact, a rolling bag wastes a lot of space with it's wheel mechanism and hard case, and you can typically pack a lot more in a soft bag of the similar size.
With carry-on bags only, it makes sense to do what you can to board as early as possible in order to ensure that you can find space for your bags. The other advantage of carry-on only is that you can change flights or stand by on earlier flights without praying that your checked bags get on the same flight.
