The town of Shanklin on the Isle of Wight has long been a favorite tourist resort. During the reign of Queen Victoria this town became extremely fashionable and Londoners came to the town for their summer holiday. Right the way through the eighteen hundreds lots of new facilities were built these included the railway line between Shankin and Ryde, a cliff lift and Shanklin pier which unfortunately was lost during the Great Storm of 1987. When you come to Shanklin you will find some wonderful places to stay and below we look at just a few of them.
1. Belmont – This was built as a Victorian gentleman's residence but was later turned into a hotel. It can be found in Shanklin's Old Village, it allows you easy access to the seafront at Shanklin and open all year round with 13 rooms that have been well decorated. The rooms within this hotel either look out towards the sea or over look out over the hotels garden. There is a veranda to relax on and the hotel also has a heated outdoor swimming pool.
2. Bourne Hall Country House Hotel – This was built in the 1860's as a home for one of Queen Victoria's ladies in waiting. It is set in 3 acres of mature gardens and has all the comforts one would expect from a large country house as well as the facilities modern day guests have come to expect. Certainly for those who are looking for a place that offers a romantic getaway in a tranquil location this hotel should definitely be on your shortlist.
3. Carlton Hotel – This is situated on the cliffs above Shanklin with spectacular views over Sandown Bay. Despite the cliff top location, it is still close to Shanklin's sandy beaches and for you to be able to explore Shanklin Old Village and for a refreshing walk along the esplanade. The hotel has been updated since it was built in Victorian times and you'll be well looked after during your stay here.
4. Mayfair – This is located on the Eastcliff Promenade and although the hotel faces towards the sea the terrace and gardens face out towards Nab Tower, Culver Cliff and Sandown Bay. It is within easy walking distance of the seaside beaches and the Old Village. Plus you are also a short distance from Shanklin Chine. If you don't want to swim in the sea, the hotel has an outdoor pool for you to use during the summer.
5. Luccombe Hall Country House – Surrounded by peaceful gardens high on the cliff top above Shanklin provides guests with wonderful views out over the sea. As well as having an indoor swimming pool and a large heated outdoor pool plus you have access to a beach as well. The hotel has been tastefully decorated and many of the original features of the building have been preserved. It is a great place to stay whether you have children or need a relaxing getaway.
